The Carers Take a Break service helps you think and plan how to take a break from your caring role and recharge your batteries.

Carers who have a substantial caring responsibility, can refer themselves to the service, or referrals can be made by any health or social care professional.

The criteria to access the services is:

  • Both carer and the person they care for aged 18 years and over
  • Both carer and the person they care for to live in Gateshead
  • Carer to have a substantial caring role which they need a break from

The aim of the service is to improve the health and wellbeing of carers by providing breaks that are designed by them to help them achieve time to themselves. Each break is designed to suit the carer and their individual lifestyle.

Carers have used Take a Break funding to access all sorts of breaks including weekends away, gym membership, relaxation therapies, hobby items or a chance to catch up with family and friends.

Ann's Story

Ann benefitted from rest and relaxation and a break from caring.

Ann has ME and cares for her husband who has dementia. Ann finds her caring role very tiring and stressful and struggles to cope with the demands of her caring role. Take a Break provided Ann with replacement care, a trained worker supported her husband, while she had a massage.
