Thousands of young people in the UK give up their time to care for a member of their family who could be seriously ill, physically disabled, mentally unwell, have a learning/behavioural problem or have a drug or alcohol addiction.
Many young adult carers will have been caring since they were children. For some it will be a whole new experience. Maybe a loved one has recently become unwell or perhaps their own child has a disability.
Whenever someone starts providing care for another person, it can turn their life upside down and affect their education, job opportunities, social life and personal health and wellbeing.
We have been working with and supporting carers for over 20 years and we recognise that there is a need for a specific Young Adult Carer Service.
We offer regular social activities as well as access to funding for young adult carers to organise their own social networks and outings.
We also run regular drop-ins where you can get support finding training and work, submitting applications and improving your CV.
Together with Youth Focus : North East we have developed C.A.R.E.R.S. a new employability skills programme that is exclusively for young adult carers in Gateshead. The course provides a week of skills training, based on the skills employers want to see and what young adult carers want to develop. This is followed by a week of quality work experience.
